Notes

What’s the best place in the world to start your next billion-dollar tech company? Here’s a visualization of the top 30 startup ecosystems.

It’s no surprise that Silicon Valley comes top in the Global Startup Ecosystem Report 2021 from Startup Genome.

And no surprise that New York City and London tie for rank #2.

What is surprising is how many startup hubs are emerging around the world. You don’t have to be in Silicon Valley to start a billion-dollar tech company these days.

Of the top 30 startup hubs around the world, 15 are in the US, 8 in Europe, 5 in China, 3 in Canada, 2 in India and 2 in Australia.

Africa isn’t on the map, yet, but it can’t be long before Lagos leads the way.

This is the first visualization I’ve generated with the Open Web Mind, my nascent project for shared human intelligence.

I wanted to create an image of the world that’s sufficiently distorted to show all 30 startup hubs clearly, despite so many of them being tightly clustered in North America and northern Europe.

But I wanted to retain the correct relative positions of places, so that the world still looks like the world: South America is south of North America; Australia is south of Asia; strings of startup hubs are in a recognizably straight line: Silicon Valley–Los Angeles–San Diego, Boston–New York City–Philadelphia–Washington DC, Dublin–London–Paris.

All this was done automatically, without any manual tweaking. Much more from the Open Web Mind to follow.
